Reviews of AWARENESS

Peter Fenner is a well-regarded nondual teacher and the author of "Radiant Mind: Awakening Unconditioned Awareness," and his 78-minute documentary with filmmaker Michael Bailey is well worth watching. Told largely through Peter’s words, the movie is experiential and beautifully points to the ultimate.

A beautiful, clear, and succinct documentary about our true nature, the pure awareness we are, behind the coming-and-going of everything we can see, touch, taste, hear, feel, and experience.

This is a profound film. Whether you are familiar with nondual teachings or have never heard of them, this film has the power to touch your innermost being. As you watch and listen to Peter speaking, you will be held to the point so gently and steadily, and then — you will see him smile and look down, a little shy about the wonder he is revealing, and you will feel invited into that smile and where it comes from. In creating this film so sensitively, Michael Bailey has done a great service for us all. It’s a classic — may its message spread far and wide!

What a wonderful film, Peter! Congratulations on such a beautiful transmission throughout the entire movie. It was almost like being together in person. I believe this is something that will touch many people, and allow them to have Satsang with you. I especially appreciated how simply the teachings were presented — easy to follow and imbued with Presence. Really amazing way to be touched deeply. Wow. This is a most interesting and unique way to use the medium of film. You were able to not only convey the content but also the contentlessness! Thank you and great thanks to Michael for giving such beauty to the world!

I had the immense fortune of being able to meet Peter Fenner and train with him for several years. He is one of the most authentic teachers I have ever had the chance to meet. Peter has a natural and unique ability to discover the essence of nondual traditions and to brilliantly accompany others in this discovery. This wonderful film by Michael Bailey gives us a great flavor of the amazing teachings that Peter Fenner offers. I love it!

This is an outstanding film. It’s a big step from being a seeker to discovering our true Self. This movie strengthens and confirms the recognition and knowing of my awareness. We also see that awareness brings us all to the spirit of oneness and peace we need. Thank you for your words of wisdom.

I have watched Peter Fenner and Michael Bailey’s beautiful and ‘awakening’ movie three times. With each viewing, I have experienced new insights into reality. Peter’s gentle and intimate way of speaking and teaching effortlessly invites us to enter a space of nondual awareness with him. His pure transmission of the unknowable is immediate and absolute. I recommend newcomers as well as veterans of nonduality to watch the movie and receive this profound gift of wisdom and insight, shared from Peter’s heart. This is not just a movie “to watch,” it is an experience of awareness itself.

It made the often obfuscating and mystifying ideas of awareness and non-dualism much more accessible to a western secular and rational audience. It has an artistic and often humorous edge to it that draws the viewer in and clearly a lot of thought and work has gone in to the production and direction.

I recently watched the Awareness film on Peter’s website and had an experience I thought worth sharing, an experience that continues to resonate deeply within me. I watched the film a bit at a time on a fairly busy day and found it somewhat intriguing, particularly the seemingly random footage of clouds, rain, trees etc, but I certainly didn’t think anything extraordinary was happening. That night I sat down alone in my room to watch the last part of the film in which Peter is simply talking about ‘this.’ It wasn’t until he finished talking that I realized something, or more precisely ‘no-thing’ had already happened and I was somewhere I had never been before, nowhere! To put it simply, I didn’t have a mind, nor was there the absence of a mind. I couldn’t even begin to identify with ever having had a mind! Imagine a room with a very noisy TV in it playing 24 hours a day for 56 years and then suddenly not only is the TV off, but it’s not even there, and never had been! I have experienced moments of intense peace, stillness and silence in the past but this was of another level. Not only was there no content that could be called thought, but there wasn’t even anything or anyone that could attempt to think. I found myself on my meditation cushion where this ‘experience’ or should I say ‘lack of experience’ remained perfectly stable in its depth and purity until I went to bed about half an hour later. I was intensely present and aware throughout this experience. I was completely aware, without thinking about it, that absolutely nothing was happening. This experience was both incredibly extraordinary and completely ordinary and unremarkable at the same time. I really don’t have the words for what happened. No-thing happened. I did nothing, and looking back I know nothing about this other than that it was beautiful.

As a spiritually-oriented psychotherapist, teacher, and long-time meditator, I’ve deeply appreciated Peter’s innovation, creativity and, more than anything, his passion for helping contemporary people to realize their essential nature. Peter has a fresh and unique way of synthesizing and presenting the most advanced meditative realization in a way that is meant for our times — simple, natural, and jargon-free. I think of Peter as an alchemist who has perceived the Philosopher’s Stone and its many healing qualities, and wishes for everyone to know this true jewel which has been hidden inside each human person. This new film offers a doorway into Being where that jewel is accessible to all.

So clear and accessible — thank you, Peter and Michael. I loved the relaxation of Not-Knowing — I always thought it was Knowing — but how beautiful to be reminded of the fullness of the paradox. A beautiful invitation to just breathe and be.

As Peter himself says, “This a contentless transmission... It is radical because it is so simple.” In taking on this challenge, in presenting this contentless content in film media form, Michael Bailey has framed Peter’s spoken words within a broad kaleidoscope of buddhist, natural, domestic, and empty scenes expressing the Buddhist Heart Sutra summarization: “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form.” Peter’s nondual non-teaching comes over in a tangible form. Worth watching more than once if you want to “get” it.

The documentary was sublime; I was fixed to my seat — really. Peter Fenner’s presentation, the scenes, the mix — all brought me to a very calm place. There are moonbeams circling through the place.

Peter Fenner is a down-to-earth, authentic and deeply heartful teacher. He speaks, teaches and writes from Presence. Whenever I read Peter’s books, watch or listen to him, I find that his being and his words inhabit and transmit what he is pointing to. This inspiring film is a true treasure. You will meet Peter and be gifted with his profound teachings.

Engaging with the film, Peter plunges you with ease and insight into ceaseless awareness. It doesn’t make a difference if one takes little sips or watches the whole movie. Either way, one is infused with free-flowing awareness.
